Why is it that sometimes, a new city can make you feel like it’s time for a new look? This actually happens quite often with visitors to Montreal – could it be that the good-looking locals inspire out-of-towners to upgrade their appearance…?!
In any case, whether you need a quick trim or a totally new ‘do’, there are a number of local cult favourites that will take very good care of you. Start with these and see what you think:
Best High End
If you’re on the hunt for a master stylist and have the big bucks to pay for it, you can’t go too far wrong at Helmet. Especially loved by clients with thick or difficult hair, this swanky salon on Avenue Mont Royal is voted best hair salon in Montreal year after year.
Best Part? Their ‘Hair Miles’ card gives you and anyone you refer $10 off.
Best for Budget
The holistic Aveda experience is often out-of-budget for many travellers, but Montreal’s Aveda Institute, their training school, offers seriously discounted prices on everything from blowouts to highlights. You’ll be with a trainee junior stylist, but they’ll be closely supervised as they work on you.
Best part? The lie-down beds at the washbasins and the head and shoulder massage.
Best Indie Gem
You could walk past Salon Unlistd on St Laurent street without even noticing, but those in the know enter the little door at street level, climb up to the second floor and are rewarded with a hidden mecca of fun, funky design. Owner Alex Apple uses exclusively Redken products, and does wonders with colour for both men and women.
Best part? The awesome decor and the chill playlist.
If you believe that men deserve as much attention as women when it comes to hair, then you’ll be in good company at Notorious. It’s barbering served up with a huge helping of swag, perfect if you’re looking for something seriously up to date that’ll push the envelope.
Best part? The straight razor shaves and old-skool barber chairs.
Best Spa Hairdresser
If your idea of the perfect day is to combine a hair cut and colour with a massage, facial, and an anti-aging chocolate body mask, then look no further than Spa Diva, a sophisticated urban spa right in the heart of downtown.
Best Part? The long list of complimentary drinks and a great ‘Spa Cuisine’ menu in case you get peckish.
And after your initial experience of pampering Montreal-style, what’s to stop you going all the way and splashing out on a well-deserved manicure, pedicure and thermal bath? Well, you are on vacation after all, right?
