5 Must-See Sights in Montreal

January 31, 2014

One minute you’re in the busy financial district, then next, you’re treading the old cobblestones of the vieux-port. There are so many many great neighborhoods, restaurants, bars and festivals (and apartments!) in this city that sometimes visitors forget about the iconic sights that have adorned postcards of Montreal for decades. Here are our top 5 Montreal sights to cross off your list:

Notre Dame Basilica: Whether you’re religious or not, try to spare a half hour to look inside this landmark of Old Montreal – you won’t be sorry. The Gothic Revival church has a stunning medieval-style interior that features walnut-wood carvings, stunning stained-glass windows, 24-carat gold stars in a vaulted blue ceiling, and fine art paintings.

The Olympic Stadium: Built for the 1976 Olympic Games, (but finished in the 1980s), visitors can easily spend a full day entertained by the varied exhibitions, sights and activities available within this immense sports village. Ride to the top of the iconic tower for incredible views of the city.

Museum of Fine Arts: One of the most impressive museums in North America, it’s got a respected collection of old masters and more contemporary works, and there’s always a fantastic temporary exhibit on display. Lovers of design will adore the expansive collection of furniture and homewares.

Farine Five Roses Sign: Not so much a place to visit as a well-known sight to gaze upon while strolling by the lachine canal or Old Port. It’s been a part of the Montreal skyline since the late 40’s, and can be seen as far away as the mountain. You know that sign has seen some changes since it was erected…

George-Étienne-Cartier monument: Better known as the Tam Tams meeting place (a drum circle that happens every Sunday in summer) on Mont Royal, this imposing statue by sculptor George William Hill was erected in 1919, and is over 30 metres high. Climb the steps under the giant bronze angel and gaze out onto Mont Royal Park and the Plateau neighbourhood.
