Within the Mile End thrift scene shines Citizen Vintage!

January 24, 2012

Montreal is a great shopping destination, plenty of high street stores with two luxury department stores (Holt Renfrew and Ogilvy) but the creative juices are best found in small boutiques which are peppered throughout the city. Set up besides hip and happening spot Sparrow, years of clothing sales and trips to thrift stores has culminated in a lovely little shop that is well curated, and each piece is unique in its own right. Owners Lara, Rebecca and Brooke all have an inviting feel when you walk in the shop, and if you’re looking for something in particular from shorts for the summer to a party dress, ask and they’ll help you find what you’re looking for.

The Mile End area is quickly becoming known for its vintage stores, each with their own spin on vintage and retro styles. The best thing about Citizen Vintage is how carefully selected items are, grouped by colour it makes even the most wackiest eye calm down and settle in on each colour group, one at a time. As well, the three trendy shop owners themselves make sure the store isn’t chock full of beautiful vintage pieces that are outdated but that feet seamlessly within today’s trends. Anyone with any sense of fashion knows no two people are alike in their style, which makes the store all the more brilliant. As each co-owner is able to bring her own taste into the shop’s realm.

One of my favorite things is their outstanding and ever changing window displays, which at the moment features an installation by artist Francesca Tallone. Currently the cold weather has them filling the store with chunky sweaters, skirts and pants made from wool, classic men’s shirt in thermal fabric, and of course plenty of boots, hats and scarves. What’s also great is that the store’s decor reflects the outside, with a rustic feel to mirror those toasty nights indoors away from the cold.

All in all, the store is a hit whenever you’re there, and you’ll never want to leave empty handed because there’s an always an abundance of pieces perfect to add to any collection. Be sure to check out the store soon!
