Rufus Wainwright and his sister Martha, along with Anna and Jane McGarrigle will be performing what’s sure to be an incredibly heart warming musical experience at the St. Denis Theatre on December 11th. The concert will not only be a celebration of the Christmas Season, but it will be a tribute to the late great singer/songwriter and Rufus’s mother Kate McGarrigle. The band, which will consist of incredible players like joel Zifkin, Michel Pepin, Brad Algetta, Doug Wieselman, and Chaim Tannenbaum is appropriate called the Kate McGarrigle Tribute Band.
Born in Montreal, Kate and Anna have been singing and playing piano since they were children. Rufus started playing piano when he was 6 and began touring 7 years later with the McGarrigle Sisters and Family, a folk group which also included his sister Martha. This is one talented family.
It will be 3 years since the young Wainwrights performed with Kate to raise money and awareness for the Kate McGarrigle Fund, an organization dedicated to fighting a rare form of cancer called sarcoma which affects the connective tissues. They raised $55,000, and this was to be Kate’s final performance before passing away in January 2010.
All profits from this year’s show will be donated to the Kate McGarrigle Fund in support of cancer research and treatment at McGill University, where Kate studied engineering.
