Films for miles and miles

2001_a_space_odyssey_1

Perhaps the new year bug has hit you, and you find yourself slumming around and unable to afford extravagant extra-curriculars. That’s where films step in, catch one of these today!

A classic: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film on space and evolution that had people talking a lot then, and still are, if you haven’t seen this one yet you must! How else will you understand those references to it all over the pop culture sphere. It’s screening at Cinéma du Parc from the 13th to the 19th.

As well, there is an all-day event on Saturday, Arab Revolutions in Review and Perspectives, is hosted by La Collectif Tunisien au Canada. This is a free event that starts at 10:30 am with a brunch and continues all day with an exposition of works by cartoonists and photojournalists, including the screening of two Tunisian documentaries on the uprisings earlier this year: Al Sharara (L’Étincelle) and Rouge Parole. The director of this last will be streamed live for audience questions!

Documentary: A new intriguing documentary Puppet, a sweeping look back at the history of puppetry in the United States.Afterwards there will be a live performance by the UK’s Sokobauno Puppet & Object Theatre. Check it out this Saturday. Also, on Friday, the Montreal Nintendo Orkestar electronic duo will provide live accompaniment to the 1922 silent witchcraft documentary, Häxan.

Western: I’ll be the first to admit that Westerns haven’t always been my type of film but perhaps all those Glee reruns are making me see the light to the spark they once carried. Maybe for some reason you’re re-discovering them or discovering them for the first time, if so the Rialto theatre is the perfect place for that. A series of screenings on Monday evening. This week is Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dynamite, commonly known as Duck, You Sucker!, which for the title alone packs a punch!

Politics: If you know anything about the Cinema Politica group help at Concordia, McGill and at universities around the globe, certainly the documentarie discussing politics in a variety of lights are always eye-opening, engaging and educational. This week empowerment in the name of Nike’s motto, Just Do It: A Tale of Modern-Day Outlaws on Monday. The film documents a group of young climate change activists who voice their opposition with performance art blockades.

Of course there are all those major blockbusters playing (I am not complaining about the inane action happening in MissionImpossible IV, how is Cruise still doing his own stunts?) but these independent fares provide all the visual entertainment while stimulating much more of the mind. Check them out!
